Beyonce x Coachella Announces 2018 Festival Dates

Beyoncé officially has her first tour dates for 2018 set: Coachella just announced its festival dates for next year. The two-weekend music and arts festival will take place from Friday, April 13, through Sunday, April 15, and Friday April 20 through Sunday, April 22, respectively.

The “Formation” singer was originally a 2017 Coachella headliner, but after announcing that she’s pregnant with twins in February, she had to cancel her appearance (despite delivering a show-stopping performance at the Grammys). To make up for her unexpected cancellation, Beyoncé signed on as a headliner for 2018.

Because of Beyoncé’s move, fans who plan to attend next year’s fest already know one headliner they’ll get to see, which isn’t typically the case with Coachella. Even with lineups being announced long after tickets go on sale, passes sell out at a rapid pace — so with someone like Queen B confirmed for the bill, better act fast if you want to be there.

Advance tickets for Coachella 2018 will be available starting June 2 at 11 a.m. PT.

Street Dreaming II – Paper Paulk {Album} [@PaperPaulk]

Street Dreaming 2 cover

Flashback: Picture me reading The Source Magazine, thumbing through the pages until I reach the Holy Grail…the album reviews. I scan each review to see how many mics this or that Album received. Your heart races as you read your favorite rappers review because you’re hoping their album is gonna to be THE SHIT and you’re gonna to be the FIRST to cop it!!

That artist for me was Jay-Z and the Roc-A-Fella camp. He was one of the few rappers that rewarded you for pre-ordering his album and I did so gladly with each release! I still have some of the trinkets to this day. Now…picture me walking into an actual record store, coping my Jigga CD, getting in my truck, opening the plastic (which took FOREVER!), popping out the CD and sliding it into the CD slot with a big grin on my face. I felt like all was right with the world. I’m now reading the CD booklet from cover to cover, scanning the photos, reading the liner notes and thank yous!

All of a sudden…the beat drops and Jigga’s famous “un huhuhn” followed by his lyrical prowess and beat rides are flowing out of your speakers. His albums always dropped in the winter, but no matter the weather I was going to turn the beat up a level higher and roll the windows down so YOU would know that I copped THAT Jigga!!

Fastforward: Hip Hop Magazines are mostly digital, album reviews aren’t as anticipated and record stores are “vintage”. Your anticipation of your favorite rapper’s album is spoiled by a leaked link on the internet and you have no idea what the cover actually looks like or how it reads. You’re still excited about pulling up with the latest blasting from your ride, but it’s now hooked up to your iPod, iPhone, or Android. But if you’re like me, THAT’S your ‘Holy Grail’. Not just anyone gets added to the iPod playlist without being dope and not just anyone gets played during roadtrips!

Paper Paulk is not just anyone. He’s known as ‘THE TRUTH’! When you first hear Paper Paulk on the beat you immediately notice that his voice is different, he doesn’t sound like anyone. His lyrical content is real, rugged and raw. Paulk gives you his life on a beat that’s served with story telling, punch lines, and sincerity.

When I took that first listen to Street Dreaming II I immediately had that cold day in November flashback. Beanie Sigel and Jay-Z exchanging bars of street tales, fatherless woes, and making it for their moms. You felt every bar because you knew that shit was real. Paper Paulk is The Truth, Street Dreaming II is real and when the album drops July 1st you’re gonna roll your windows down so THEY know that YOU copped it!

Popular Natural Hair Product Company, Carol’s Daughter files Bankruptcy

Carol’s Daughter Companies File for Bankruptcy

By Jacqueline Palank

Companies affiliated with Carol’s Daughter filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Thursday in connection with the beauty brand’s move to close most of its stores.

CD Stores LLC, formerly known as Carol’s Daughter Stores LLC, filed its Chapter 11 petition with the Manhattan bankruptcy court, as did the individual companies behind Carol’s Daughter stores. Court papers show that CD Stores is 100% owned by parent company Carol’s Daughter Holdings LLC (the parent company didn’t file for bankruptcy). And the petition, which reported assets and debts each in the $1 million to $10 million range, was signed by Carol’s Daughter Chief Financial Officer John D. Elmer.

In new court papers filed Thursday afternoon, Mr. Elmer said most Carol’s Daughter stores have been unprofitable since 2010. Before the bankruptcy filing, the company closed all but two of its seven stores and terminated 29 of its 42 employees. It hopes to use its time in Chapter 11 to reorganize and consolidate its operations around its two open stores, in Brooklyn and Harlem. Besides the stores, Carol’s Daughter products are offered for sale on its website and through such third parties as the Home Shopping Network and Sephora.

In fact, Carol’s Daughter products are now available in more than 2,000 other retail stores around the U.S., according to Richard Dantas, chief executive of Carol’s Daughter. He said  that the company is refocusing its distribution strategy to focus on these retailers.

“Today’s filing in no way reflects the parent company’s healthy financial situation, and is a part of its plan to grow the brand through national retail outlets,” Mr. Dantas said Thursday in an emailed statement.

Joining CD Stores in Chapter 11 were such affiliated companies as CD Store Atlantic Terminal LLC and CD Store Roosevelt Field LLC, which respectively share addresses with Carol’s Daughter stores in Brooklyn and Garden City, N.Y.

Founded in 1993 by Lisa Price (the eponymous Carol’s daughter), the chain makes hair, body and skincare products with natural ingredients, with a special focus on products for African-American women. The line has enjoyed financial backing in the past from such celebrities as Will Smith, Jada Pinkett Smith and Jay Z and was featured on Oprah.

Carol’s Daughter is a portfolio company of private equity firm Pegasus Capital Advisors LP, according to its website. A Pegasus spokesman declined comment.

ABL Advisor, an online trade publication for asset-based lenders, reported Tuesday that Carol’s Daughter Holdings LLC borrowed a $3 million senior secured revolving credit facility from Siena Lending Group LLC for working capital and the expansion of the company’s distribution model. A Siena representative wasn’t immediately available to comment.

Last year, Reuters reported that Carol’s Daughter was exploring a sale.

‘Tunnel Vision’ Returns to YouTube

The video ban on JT’s newest single is lifted from YouTube.

YouTube and Google have a strong history of banning videos quickly and swiftly. When it comes to controversial material from musicians, they have an obligation but sometimes artistic expression goes beyond just algorithms. With Justin Timberlake’s newest single, ‘Tunnel Vision’ off of the 20/20 Experience became a perfect example of that.

After initially yanking the video quickly after it surfaced, it looks like the tech giant has gone back on their algorithmic banning approach.

“While our guidelines generally prohibit nudity, we make exceptions when it is presented in an educational, documentary or artistic context, and take care to add appropriate warnings and age restrictions,” a YouTube representative said in a statement, via E! Online.

Google has come under fire in the past for their “un-biased” approach to certain situations. With this reversal, we may see the flood gates open with more and more content that comes with the explicit warning. “Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke featuring Pharell and T.I. definitely proves these videos can be highly successful.

JT embarks on a summer tour with Jay-Z that kicks off July 17 in Toronto to promote this first album in seven years.
